[Ksummit-discuss] Linux Foundation Technical Advisory Board Elections and Nomination process

[James Bottomley]

The elections for five of the ten members of the Linux Foundation
Technical Advisory Board[TAB] are held every year. Currently the
election will be at the 2014 Kernel Summit in Chicago, USA, at one of
the Joint events (probably on the Wednesday 20 August) and will be open
to all attendees of the Weeks events (Kernel Summit, LinuxCon and other
summits).

Anyone is eligible to stand for election, simply send your nomination
to:

event where the election is held (Currently thought to be the evening of
August 20th Central Daylight Time). Although, please remember if you're
not going to be present that things go wrong with both networks and

Thanks to everyone for the corrections: Chris does work at Facebook now,
so his address is clm@fb.com (I should have checked before cutting and
pasting from two years ago).

The Time and Place for the election will be 20:00 at the Museum of
Science and Industry on Wednesday 20 August (The joint KS/LinuxCon
event).

We still have only 3 nominations for 5 places, So we'll do a last call
for nominations at 20:00 and if there are five or fewer, there won't be
an election and the TAB will use its charter process to appoint people
to fill any shortfall.

Update on current status

The elections for five of the ten members of the Linux Foundation
Technical Advisory Board[TAB] are held every year. Currently the
election will be at the 2014 Kernel Summit in Chicago, USA, at the joint
event on Wednesday 20 August at the museum of science and industry.  The
election will be held at 20:00 in a room specially reserved for the
purpose.   We now have ten candidates for election.  The first four are
incumbents plus six newcomers:

read out by the person running the election (Either Jon Corbet or Greg
K-H).

Anybody wishing to stand may still nominate any time before 20:00 on
Wednesday by replying to this email (although nominations must be
received by 20:00 so don't wait until the last moment ... especially
with the networking problems we've been having at the Kernel Summit).

Sage has lead the ceph project since its inception, contributed to the kernel as 
well as had an influence on projects like openstack.

Reminder and update:

As described below, the TAB elections will be held next week with the
Linux Kernel Summit and the Korea Linux Forum. The election will be
held at 6:00pm Monday evening during the on-site evening reception.
Each candidate will have the opportunity to make a brief statement
before polling. Candidates who are not able to attend personally may
provide a written statement to be read out.

Final reminder and update:

The TAB elections will be held at 6:00pm tomorrow evening, Monday
October 26th during the evening booth-crawl and reception in the Park
Studio room. We will start at 6:00 sharp. Don't be late.

Agenda:
1) Welcome and brief summary of what the TAB does
2) Questions
3) Last call for nominations
4) Candidate statements. Candidates will each have 1 minute to make a
brief statement. Candidates who are unable to attend can provide a
written statement to be read out.
5) Review of polling procedure
6) Polling

The doors to the room will be closed at the start of polling. You must
be in the room by that time if you intend to cast a ballot. Polling
will be conducted by secret paper ballot and a privacy shield will be
provided. Voters must exit the room after casting their ballot.

Counting shall be performed by 2 or 3 neutral people after polling has
completed. Results will be provided by email to the mailing lists
later that same evening.

Is there a good description of what is expected of a TAB member? How much time
is involved? What makes a great TAB member?

I've read the charter and scanned some of the minutes, but I'd still like to
hear from some of the "incumbants". Specifically, what makes you successful as a
member of the TAB?

  "Only one vote per candidate will be counted."

means in:

Voting:

Each person present at the time of the election shall be handed a printed
ballot.  Voters may vote for as many candidates as they wish. Only one
vote per candidate will be counted. A space will be provided where
they can fill out the ballot in private and place it into a box to be
counted in private.

Sorry this was a bit confusing.  Basically, it means you can vote for as
many candidates as you like, but if you can't vote multiple times for the
same candidate on your ballot.

Thanks.  That was the only explanation I could come up with that made
any sense, but it definitely isn't obvious (to me) that that is the
meaning of the words.

I've been asked several versions of the same question, and also the
annual "what does the TAB actually do?" question, so I'm going to try
and answer them all in one email:

As the name implies, the primary job of the TAB is to advise the Linux
Foundation board of directors on technical, social and political
issues regarding Linux and Open Source. Our job is to represent the
views of Linux developers and to foster constructive communication
between the Linux Foundation leadership and our community.

A natural by-product of this is that the TAB also acts in the
background to identify and resolve issues for the Linux community
before they become a problem. The TAB tends to be composed of well
respected individuals with good connections throughout our community,
and so we're in a good place to recognize who to talk to when an issue
is raised.

Finally, there are a few projects that the TAB is directly responsible
for. We make sure there is a planning committee for the Linux Plumbers
conference every year. We run a 'buddy' program to help new Linux
Foundation member companies learn how to be fine upstanding Linux
citizens. We are the response team for any issues of harassment or
abuse within the kernel community. In past years we coordinated the
response to UEFI Secure Boot to ensure that Linux would not be locked
out of the consumer PC market, and been active in helping member
companies understand and be comfortable with the licencing obligations
associated with Linux.

A good TAB member is well respected by the community, is a ready
listener, is comfortable discussing both technical and social issues,
and has a good understanding of how the Linux community works. Since
the TAB deals with a wide range of issues, the ideal TAB candidate
should be prepared to consider issues outside of their own area of
expertise. Sometime the most important characteristic of a TAB member
is recognizing when an issue is beyond their depth and go looking for
the right person to consult.

Time commitment wise, The TAB meets once a month for a conference
call, plus any additional time required to deal with TAB business.
Once a year (6 months after the TAB general election) the TAB elects
one member to serve as the chair, and the chair of the TAB is proposed
to the Linux Foundation to serve as a Linux Foundation Director which
has additional time requirements.

One last point, some issues addressed by the TAB are highly sensitive
and any member can request a topic to be kept strictly confidential.
We do this to protect the working relationship we have with industry
bodies, and to protect the companies and individuals involved. Any
prospective TAB member must be comfortable abiding by our
confidentiality rules.

The elections for five of the ten members of the Linux Foundation 
Technical Advisory Board (TAB) are held every year[1]. This year the
election will be at the 2016 Kernel Summit in Santa Fe, NM.

The elections will take place at the conference center on Wednesday Nov 
2nd, shortly before the evening Kernel Summit/Plumbers reception.  The 
elections will be open to all attendees of both the Kernel Summit and 
the Linux Plumbers.

Anyone is eligible to stand for election, simply send your nomination to:

Just before the election, everyone will have a chance to introduce 
themselves and briefly talk about why they would like to participate on 
the Technical Advisory Board.   This year, we're encouraging everyone to 
include those details along with their nomination, which we will compile

Note: nominations received after midnight tonight MDT (a.k.a. 06:00 UTC)
may not appear on the preprinted ballots, depending on when we need to
have them ready to print.

We will be using preprinted ballots which will be counted both by
machine and cross-checked by hand.  If this works out we may trust the
automatic system (an open-source package called SDAPS) in the futureand
only do manual counts on demand,
