Is anyone interested in discussing a new mount API in the unconference
track?

Think bindmountat, etc.

I'm quite interested. The current mount API is crufty, very
string-heavy, and far too multiplexed.

We can discuss however will there be anyone who's going to write the
code? I know Miklos Szeredi was looking into that but it didn't go anywhere
AFAIK and he won't be at KS/LinuxCon. And I'm not sure if Al will be at the
conference..

ISTR Eric Biederman mentioned this, but I don't know whether he's
volunteering or whether he'll be there.

I could try to write it, but my VFS track record is pretty bad.

I'm quite certain Eric will at least be at the venue. Eric?

I've scheduled Mount API for 12:00.

(For anyone else who wants to schedule something for Tuesday, please
leave a comment on the spreadsheet --- right click, select "insert a
comment" --- on the slot that you're trying to reserve.)

I tried to write it down for 12:00, but I don't seem to have edit
perms.

This sounds like a perfect 30 minute slot for Tuesday's "unconference"
track. Someone want to try to suggest a slot? Go to
http://goo.gl/xmeoSd and leave a comment on a time slot you'd like to
propose....

FYR here's Al's summary of the subject, which I think is a good starting point:

"Frankly, I wonder if we are trying to pack too much into one
syscall - not just in terms of overloading it (that much is obvious),
but in terms of trying to cram a sequence of syscalls into one. If
we end up introducing new API(s) for mount(), it's probably worth
considering something like this:
        * open a connection to fs type driver, get a descriptor
        * use normal IO syscalls (usually just write(2)) on that
descriptor to tell fs type driver what do we want. If any kind of
authentication is needed, that's the time for doing it
        * attach the thing identified by that descriptor to mountpoint"

Thanks,
Miklos

I am here and I will be here all week.

With respect to bind mounts I was mentioning a patch that someone
was actively working on a week or two ago to allow at least the read-only
flag to be specified when a bind mount is created.

For a whole new clean mount API I don't know. I do think it would be
productive for us to get together and talk. Weather that is at the
container session on Friday or elswhere I don't know.
